ELZORVAN Wood — furniture with grandchildren in mind

The Kasmir doubles the hall's light and the household's punctuality: float glass silvered thick, bevels ground by hand, and a joinery frame in oak, walnut or water-gilt that treats reflection as furniture.

The joinery works in solid oak, walnut and ash, air-dried three years before the saw earns its say. Frames are mortise-and-tenon, tops are breadboard-ended against the seasons, and finishes are oil and wax — surfaces that mend with a cloth rather than fail with a scratch.

Care

Keep solid wood a metre from radiators and out of noon sun; wood moves with the seasons and forgives households that remember it is alive. Breadboard ends may proud a millimetre in January — that is engineering, not error.

Hinges take a drop of oil yearly; drawers a candle-stub of wax on the runners. Everything else is decades.
